Chapter 13

Damian- The Black Harvest

A woman lay on the floor violently convulsing.

Josie was suddenly on her feet next to me. “No! No! Why are they here? How can this be?”

“Aaarrrggh!” another man shouted. Black smoke roiled around him, forcing its way into his eyes, nose, ears, and mouth. The remaining patrons left in the bar were on their feet, scanning for threats, and I heard the bartender cocking a pump shotgun.

“What’s happening?” I asked. Worry for Abigail and Celeste dug deep into me, quickening my breathing. Fear tried to claw its way into my heart, but I didn’t let it. This was exactly what my dad trained me for—even if he never said so directly. Deep breaths calmed my nerves, steadying my thoughts. I needed to be a rock. I needed to keep my wits about me to protect the people I cared about.

“I’m sorry, My Love. I have to stay neutral,” Josie said as she cupped my cheek, a tear falling from her eye. Again, I reminded myself that I’d only met this woman less than twenty minutes ago. Still, she sounded sincere, like it pained her to have to stay out of whatever was going on. “If they hurt you, I swear I’ll break the pact, consequences be damned. Be safe.”

Another person screamed. I tore my eyes from Josie to try to find out what in the hell was going on. When I looked back, she was gone. I didn't have time to focus on that or wonder how she vanished.

Hunters surrounded those who convulsed on the floor. They gripped their weapons, aiming them at the people who they'd only just been talking to. Their faces had hardened, their eyes full of fear and fury.

I ran to one man’s side. He had long black hair and a brown duster jacket that had seen its fair share of battles. He looked like he hadn’t shaved in months. Out of the few left in the restaurant, he was the only one other than me that seemed to be keeping his shit together. “Do you know what’s happening?”

He frowned at me and replied in a raspy voice, “It’s an overlap.”

I blinked. “An overlap? Here? How is that even possible?”

He shrugged. “Don’t know. Bad luck, I guess.” He threw back his shot of whiskey, then grabbed the nearest glass and downed that drink too.

Another scream tore through the restaurant. The woman flailed more violently, her arms, legs, and head smashing against the floor. No one harmed her or the other people on the ground, no doubt waiting to see if they won their battle of wills before making a move.

I shook my head in disbelief. “I need to find my friends,” I said, turning to leave.

The man grabbed me by the shoulder, and I looked back at him. “Listen, kid. You should get as far away from here as you can. Who knows how many demons are gonna show up looking for a body suit!”

“I’m not leaving them behind.” I scowled.

The man nodded.
